Using Social Media to our Advantage

There are many pros to social media such as helping us stay connected, promoting ourselves, informing us, and eliminating periods of boredom. Social media is primarily a tool I use to promote and market my music. On the other hand, there are a lot of cons with social media such as not being in the present moment and comparing yourself with others. Unfortunately, sometimes I get lost in the posts and lives of others. I often try to keep my social media usage down and try to stay more involved with what is actually going on around me. According to Statista, an online statistics website, the average amount of time spent nationwide on social media in 2017 was just about over two hours a day. On average, I use social media 2-3 hours a day, so I definitely fall into this statistic. My goal is to make my usage on social media more career-based and use my social media to be the mover and shaker of society and not let social media be in control of me. We can all agree that we have fallen victim to allow social media to dictate our time. However, what if we were the ones who helped our social media audiences set goals, create ambitions, and change the world.

Being in the music business, I try to post about my music and my life as often as I can on websites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, to keep my followers involved in what I am doing. Most of the time, however, I am scrolling and exploring others posts, passing time while I can’t sleep or while I’m bored. This is where I feel reliant on social media. I believe that social media is addictive and people should be aware of how much time they spend on it because they will miss out on the life that is happening right in front of them.

Social media is a great tool, however, and a great way to communicate effectively with others, who without social media, it wouldn’t be as easy to contact them. There are a lot of times that I don’t feel involved enough with it when it comes to my music, and I have to remind myself to post. I lean towards Instagram for impact, and Facebook and Twitter for the more detailed posts.

I would be lying if I say social media doesn’t play a big role in my life. As a singer/songwriter, it is critical of me to be posting and sharing my music as much as possible. I have built a fan base solely off of social media and it allows me to connect with people across the globe. Social media allows me to post something that reaches a mass number of people in a matter of seconds.

When questioning my time spent on social media, I evaluate whether I am using this time in a useful manner or using it to pass time. Social media is a very useful tool if you use it right and use it to your advantage.
